AquaPaddle events are springing up around the UK for all paddle boarders to get involved!
Similar to Parkrun, it is a free, timed, social event over a 5km course, but on water, of course. It is a great way to keep fit, compete against yourself to up your paddle boarding game, and have fun in the process. It is a fantastic opportunity for paddler boarders to get together, have fun, enjoy nature, and improve fitness and wellbeing. But don't worry if you are a regular runner at Parkrun, this event is on Sunday mornings, every fortnight.
It is suitable for all levels, and is a great opportunity to pick up tips on technique as well as meet paddle boarders from other areas of the UK, so there are new locations to find and friends to be made. You will need to register for the event online at www.aquapaddle.org where you can also see all the locations. Why not visit somewhere new and be an 'AquaPaddle Tourist'?!
AquaPaddle is a Paddle Sport charity. It aims to help people’s mental well-being and physical health through paddle sport via BlueSpace sessions. These are free paddling sessions for those who could benefit from the healing and calming effects of being out on the open water. As a charity, they rely on donations, which you can make when you book your place at an event.
Research has shown that the proximity of water — whether an oceanfront or lakefront view or simply taking a stroll along the beach — can reduce stress levels and promote feelings of relaxation. This type of therapy has become known as blue space therapy.
Although, AquaPaddle is a free event, for certain waterways you may need to have a waterways licence, which will be specified when you book your place. So this is a good time to become a member of British Canoeing, who are supporting these events, as the membership includes the waterways license.
There is a kit requirement, which is explained fully on the website:
- AquaPaddle Number
- Buoyancy Aid
- Leash if on a SUP
- Whistle
- Change of clothes
AquaPaddle have built a network of Delivery Partners from the paddling community, across the country, to provide these sessions to their local communities. As well as competitors, they need willing volunteers to marshall and help out on the day, so if you don’t feel up to a speed paddle, you may want to get involved in dry land. Another way to help them raise funds is by buying some great 'Merch' from AquaPaddle bibs, printed with your personal AquaPaddle number, to caps and t-shirts. - Click here to BUY
There are locations across the country for both AquaPaddle and BlueSpace events. New locations are being added regularly, so check the map to see where your nearest AquaPaddle is and if you can get involved to support, go to www.aquapaddle.org to find your local event and what to expect. Alternatively if you have any questions, drop them an email at paddle@aquapaddle.org
